~ Jessy Lanza - development & design ~

Concept development

I wanted to approach the design treatment in an abstract and conceptual way. Influenced by the style of music and feeling/tone of voice taken by the existing promotional material surrounding Jessy.

I felt the existing visual content had a certain theme of 'urban decay' and the transformation of something broken into something beautiful. I wanted to use images I associated with this; alongside some basic geometrical shapes I feel express the beats and digital nature of the song.

I will then screen print the design in really bold and punchy positive colours. I feel the screen printed element will express the hand made and organic voice the artist has and the colours will represent the positivity and bubbly beat.

I produced this design using bright primary colours that I felt are representative of the positive and upbeat nature of the song well.

I wanted the design to be very expressive in nature but still completely digital and using basic shapes/vectors due to the music production being digital & experimental.

Some of the elements include -

- Repeat patterns and dot dash type patterns - expressing the beats and repetitive drum sounds within the song.
- Broken drums - Relevant to the instruments used within the song, but broken to represent the 'oh no' and the grime aesthetic.
- Keyboard - representative of the techno style of the music and instruments used by the artist within the song
- Dead flower - inspired by the grime and dead aesthetic - makes me think 'oh no'
- Type saying OH NO and JL for Jessy Lanza
- Figure of a person in a slumped pose, feeling of OH NO

Overall I feel this final design treatment is successfully meeting the brief. The initial feeling is really bold and positive due to the busy yet clean aesthetic and bold colour combinations; this is well informed by the positive upbeat nature of the song.

The patterns and combination of 'a lot going on' really draws your eye into the design. I feel is captures the essence of the song well and upon looking closer you understand the relevance of each part and how it creates that sense of 'OH NO'.

I produced a mock up as a reference of what id like the final screen prints to look like and to be used as promotion for my website and social media etc.
